Black History Month Now 65% Hispanic

Though still commonly known as "Black History Month", February is now 65% Hispanic, a recent study has shown.

Established in 1926 to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, data indicates that 18 of the 28 days of the month are currently less associated with African American heritage than Hispanic culture - such as the birthday of singer-songwriter Shakira (February 2nd), and the Fiesta de San Blas, the patron saint of Paraguay (February 3rd).

Millions of Mexican Americans also celebrate Mexico's Constitution Day on February 5th, while many Spanish Americans observe the Basque National Day on February 25th.

"It's weird since it seems February was always about black people, but I guess that's the way it goes. The Mexicans just kinda take over," one African American remarked.

Other notable Hispanic holidays and events now overshadowing African American traditions in February include La Candeleria, an occasion for celebrations and parades in many Spanish-speaking countries, and the anniversary of the birth of famous nineteenth-century statesman Benito Juarez.

In addition, February becomes 66% Hispanic every four years, as Mexican world record speed walker Raul Gonzalez was born on a leap year.
